Having been in this industry for more than three decades, I’ve learned a lot along the way. Most importantly, I’ve learned that any broker can complete a transaction or policy placement, but the exceptional ones help clients identify their needs and find solutions that are consistent with their management philosophy, operating style and culture.
Although most successful companies have a strategic plan and an overall sales plan, few have a risk management business plan fully integrated into operations. Sure, many organizations have risk management personnel on staff, but through no fault of their own, I’ve found that their roles often are not aligned to effectively serve the organization’s goals or operating style. This can be very challenging but must be accomplished to maximize risk management’s benefits and create a competitive advantage.
This became very evident with our client – a medium sized trucking company that faced a number of challenges. With nearly 500 power units, rapid growth, losses, driver turnover and on-time service were all major issues. By applying business management techniques, losses came down by 40 percent within 12 months, turnover was down and customer service improved significantly.
Because of my experience, I can often see what a company may not. Once they reap the benefits of a comprehensive risk management business plan, they can’t imagine operating without one.
