Vice President
To be the best in anything, you must face challenges head-on. Conquering tough insurance exposures that few others can, or even want to, reminds me why I entered this industry over a decade ago. Negotiating a win in complex situations defines my success, and in this industry that can mean large property schedules or difficult casualty exposures.
Recently, a company I encountered with a poor loss history was quoted $1.8 million for their renewal program. By structuring a unique deductible program with a specified amount per claim and placing an aggregate on the maximum amount the client would have to pay, my negotiations with the insurance company delivered a $1.2-million quote, saving the client $600,000.
That level of commitment and involvement remains long-term with all my clients. I personally meet with clients to discuss individual needs, as well as with the service provider throughout the life of the partnership. Other firms often hand off deals after the initial meeting, which leads to missed communications.
An agent's top priority should be employing negotiation skills with underwriters to provide the best possible solution. If it is, a client not only receives better pricing, but a better program and overall experience.
