For example, we recognized that a client’s
liabilities from a Superfund site created an impediment for
a Fortune 1000 manufacturer. The solution: we negotiated a
buyout of environmental liabilities between my client and
a third-party contractor to extinguish their Superfund liabilities.
The agreement was structured for favorable tax treatment and
provided cost overrun protection for 30 years. It was one
of only a handful of arrangements of its kind ever made.
I couldn’t have accomplished that without
thoroughly understanding my client’s business. That’s
