It wasn't until about 1974 when businesses started thinking about risk management as a viable tool. And not for a few years later did I eventually convince Dana's CEO that the best way to lower the cost of claims was to stop them altogether.
The initial suggestion bordered on sarcasm. But when our fledgling group implemented groundbreaking safety and loss-prevention measures at 600 facilities around the world, claims held steady in the midst of rapid growth. It was then that the executives sat up and took notice.
It was the inception of an era for a host of new safety standards that protected not only workers, but the solvency of the companies for whom they worked. Through painstaking analysis, we carefully balanced Dana's appetite for risk with the cost of insurance—all while preparing for major catastrophes.
And the catastrophes came. But it wasn't long before we discovered that finding the true balance lies at the heart of every company's unique culture. From there, we developed alternative risk solutions, including Dana's captive, which was implemented and has been sustained ever since with no more than the initial $21,000 investment.
